چکیده

approved: _____________________________________________________ Un-Ku Moon Kartikeya Mayaram Circuits operating outside the earth’s atmosphere are more vulnerable to cosmic radiation and require special design consideration. The purpose of this work is to explore methods of mitigating the effect of radiation in phase locked loop (PLL) circuits. Several voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) and two complete PLLs are designed and fabricated in a 0.35μm silicon on insulator (SOI) CMOS process. These circuits are characterized before and after exposure to total ionizing dose (TID) radiation to determine the effect of the radiation. This work shows that TID radiation has a relatively minor effect on PLL circuits in SOI process technology. All digital PLLs (ADPLLs) also provide increased resistance to radiation and thus are attractive for space applications. The design of a digitally controlled analog oscillator (DCAO), a key component of an ADPLL, is also presented. Copyright by Martin Vandepas August 25, 2005 All Rights Reserved Oscillators and Phase Locked Loops for Space Radiation Environments

Closed-Form Analytical Equations to Transient Analysis of Bang-Bang Phase-Locked Loops

Due to the nonlinear nature of the Bang-Bang phase-locked loops (BBPLLs), its transient analysis is very difficult. In this paper, new equations are proposed for expression of transient behavior of the second order BBPLLs to phase step input. This approach gives new insights into the transient behavior of BBPLLs. Approximating transient response to reasonable specific waveform the loop tran...

Modeling Timing Jitter in Oscillators

Timing jitter in oscillators is a key factor determining the phase noise performance of phase-locked loops. This paper reviews a theory of phase noise in oscillators, and presents timing jitter models suitable for discrete event simulation of these systems.

Three-Frequency Resonances in Coupled Phase-Locked Loops

We construct an experimental model of a nonlinear dynamical system with three frequencies. With this analog electronic circuit made up of quasiperiodically forced coupled phase-locked loops, we investigate the structure of the scaling of three-frequency resonances or lockings in the dynamics. We hypothesize and confirm experimentally that for weak coupling the three-frequency resonance with the...

Dual Phase Detector Based Delay Locked Loop for High Speed Applications

In this paper a new architecture for delay locked loops will be presented.  One of problems in phase-frequency detectors (PFD) is static phase offset or reset path delay. The proposed structure decreases the jitter resulted from PFD by switching two PFDs. In this new architecture, a conventional PFD is used before locking of DLL to decrease the amount of phase difference between input and outpu...

The Transient Behavior of LC and Ring Oscillators under External Frequency Injection

In this work, time domain analysis is used to solve Adler’s equation in order to obtain the required time, for an oscillator under external injection, reaching the steady-state condition. Mathematical approach has been applied to fully describe the transient of frequency acquisition in injection-locked LC and Ring oscillators considering their time-varying nature. Then, the analysis is verifie...
